Emilio Carballido Cultural Center

Casa de Cultura Emilio Carballido

The Casa de Cultura Emilio Carballido opened in 1987 as the Centro Cultural Del Valle Norte. It was re-named and re-opened in 1996 at the request of people from the community. Today it’s a major neighborhood center for yoga, karate, ballet and children’s jazz.

  • Emilio Carballido Fernández (1925 – 2008) was a writer and playwright originally from Cordoba in Veracruz. Changing course after studying law, he finished his degree in Philosophy and Letters, eventually achieving a master’s degree in Literature. He went on to become direction of the National School of Theater Arts of the National Fine Arts Institute (INBAL). In this role, he became a force for promoting the theater arts across North and South America and the Caribbean. He also authored several volumes of short stories, nine novels, and an extensive body of work on the theater.

The Casa de Cultura Emilio Carballido is probably best known for housing a gallery for temporary exhibitions. Entirely renovated in 2019, it reopened again with exhibitions devoted to the cultural life of the City and the neighborhood.

The cultural center is an integral part of neighborhood life in north Del Valle. The convenient location means it’s also accessible to folks from the Roma and Condesa neighborhoods.

Hours: Monday through Friday, 9:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.
